In this short article, we improve the dynamical stability and instability results for Ricci-flat metrics under Ricci flow proved by Sesum and Haslhofer, getting rid of the integrability assumption.Comment: 6 page

Remarks on the extension of the Ricci flow

We present two new conditions to extend the Ricci flow on a compact manifold over a finite time, which are improvements of some known extension theorems.Comment: 9 pages, to appear in Journal of Geometric Analysi

Stability of complex hyperbolic space under curvature-normalized Ricci flow

Using the maximal regularity theory for quasilinear parabolic systems, we prove two stability results of complex hyperbolic space under the curvature-normalized Ricci flow in complex dimensions two and higher. The first result is on a closed manifold. The second result is on a complete noncompact manifold. To prove both results, we fully analyze the structure of the Lichnerowicz Laplacian on complex hyperbolic space. To prove the second result, we also define suitably weighted little H\"{o}lder spaces on a complete noncompact manifold and establish their interpolation properties.Comment: Some typos in version 2 are correcte

Investigating Off-shell Stability of Anti-de Sitter Space in String Theory

We propose an investigation of stability of vacua in string theory by studying their stability with respect to a (suitable) world-sheet renormalization group (RG) flow. We prove geometric stability of (Euclidean) anti-de Sitter (AdS) space (i.e., Hn\mathbf{H}^n) with respect to the simplest RG flow in closed string theory, the Ricci flow. AdS space is not a fixed point of Ricci flow. We therefore choose an appropriate flow for which it is a fixed point, prove a linear stability result for AdS space with respect to this flow, and then show this implies its geometric stability with respect to Ricci flow. The techniques used can be generalized to RG flows involving other fields. We also discuss tools from the mathematics of geometric flows that can be used to study stability of string vacua.Comment: 29 pages, references added in this version to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravit

    Critical behavior of collapsing surfaces

We consider the mean curvature evolution of rotationally symmetric surfaces. Using numerical methods, we detect critical behavior at the threshold of singularity formation resembling the one of gravitational collapse. In particular, the mean curvature simulation of a one-parameter family of initial data reveals the existence of a critical initial surface that develops a degenerate neckpinch. The limiting flow of the Type II singularity is accurately modeled by the rotationally symmetric translating soliton.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figure

The stability inequality for Ricci-flat cones

    Get PDF
In this article, we thoroughly investigate the stability inequality for Ricci-flat cones. Perhaps most importantly, we prove that the Ricci-flat cone over CP^2 is stable, showing that the first stable non-flat Ricci-flat cone occurs in the smallest possible dimension. On the other hand, we prove that many other examples of Ricci-flat cones over 4-manifolds are unstable, and that Ricci-flat cones over products of Einstein manifolds and over Kähler-Einstein manifolds with h^{1,1}>1 are unstable in dimension less than 10. As results of independent interest, our computations indicate that the Page metric and the Chen-LeBrun-Weber metric are unstable Ricci shrinkers. As a final bonus, we give plenty of motivations, and partly confirm a conjecture of Tom Ilmanen relating the lambda-functional, the positive mass theorem and the nonuniqueness of Ricci flow with conical initial data
